Cathedral of Silves, Algarve

Contemplate the monumental cathedral of Silves on your passage through this part of the Algarve.

The cathedral is situated next to the Silves Castle, also built with the red color that characterizes this Algarve town. It was built in 1189 upon an ancient mosque, rebuilt after the Reconquest of 1249, and restored several times due to the damage caused 1755 earthquake.

Its monumental structure dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries, and its exterior highlights the ogival portal, set in a barroque façade, and window in the same style.

The interior consists of three naves, transept and a beautiful tripartite header. Below the tower arises the chapel of São João de Rego, in a gothic style, with tombs, one of João Rego himself, one of the settlers of Madeira.

In front of the cathedral is the Misericordia Church, which shows off on its side a beautiful Manueline door.
